Democratic Ohio Senate candidate Representative Tim Ryan (D-OH-13) joined all other House Democrats and voted to kill to Hyde Amendment — a rule that bars federal funding of abortions within the United States.
In addition to striking down the Hyde Amendment, Ryan voted to also undo the Helms Amendment, which will allow the U.S. to send taxpayer funds to contribute to elective abortions in foreign countries.
Due to the dramatic leftward shift, Ryan and other Democrats have opened the door to permit elective abortions for Medicaid recipients — a move that has never been completed before.
“Democrats in Washington, including those running for Senate, have fully embraced a radical, pro-abortion agenda. They voted to force taxpayers to fund abortions, including elective abortions overseas, throwing out decades of bipartisan consensus and rejecting the will of the American people,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson Lizzie Litzow.
Furthermore, like the move with the Hyde Amendment, the bill without the Helms Amendment will be the first appropriations bill without the text to block international aid from directly paying for elective abortions.
Democrats seemingly ignored the preference of the majority of Americans. Recent polls have demonstrated that voters overwhelmingly oppose utilizing taxpayer money to fund abortions, both in the United States and in other countries. In fact, 77% of all Americans are against sending the funds to other countries for abortions.
“That only demonstrates one thing: the Democrat Party has been taken over by the radical Left. Ohioans deserve a leader who will fight for life and fight to protect their taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars, and Tim Ryan proved it isn’t him,” Litzow continued.
Ryan is running largely unopposed in the Senate Democratic primary contest in an effort to replace retiring Senator Rob Portman (R-OH).
